Students will explore the delivery of public healthcare services, the Medical Services Plan (MSP), and the importance of privacy legislation such as the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

Anatomy and Physiology Terminology 1 – 60 Hours

This foundational course covers the structure and function of the human body, introducing medical terminology associated with major systems including the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, and digestive systems. Emphasis is placed on correct pronunciation, spelling, and usage of medical terms in a BC healthcare environment, supporting accurate communication and documentation in medical offices and clinical settings.

Anatomy and Physiology Terminology 2 – 60 Hours

Building on the first course, this module delves into more complex body systems such as the endocrine, nervous, reproductive, urinary, and lymphatic systems. Students expand their understanding of specialized medical terms and their application in clinical settings across BC. The course integrates terminology with pathologies and diagnostic procedures frequently encountered in BC’s primary and specialist care environments.

Clinical Procedures 1 – 60 Hours

This course provides hands-on training in assisting healthcare providers with routine clinical procedures, such as measuring vital signs, preparing examination rooms, sterilizing instruments, and infection control practices. Instruction aligns with BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) guidelines and standards set by regional health authorities to ensure safety and best practices in clinical and ambulatory settings.

Medical Office Procedures – 60 Hours

Students are trained in the day-to-day administrative responsibilities of a BC medical office, including appointment scheduling, patient intake, filing systems, and front-desk operations. The course emphasizes use of electronic scheduling systems and adherence to BC’s patient confidentiality standards, fostering efficiency and professionalism in office environments such as walk-in clinics, family practices, and specialist offices.

Medical Transcription – 60 Hours

This course will focus on the skills necessary for medical transcription production. Students will learn how to create various medical reports and documents, including discharge summaries, history and physical examination reports, operative and autopsy reports, and diagnostic imaging studies.
The course will cover important aspects of formatting medical reports, medical records, and business documents. It will also teach students how to comprehend medical content, including terminology related to drugs and disease processes. Additionally, students will learn to spell accurately and apply proper English grammar, structure, and style.
By the end of the course, students will enhance their proficiency in medical terminology, improve their competency in using relevant software and keyboarding skills, and learn how to identify errors both on screen and in print. The course will also include training on how to edit voice recognition dictation.

Medical Billing / Book Keeping – 60 Hours

Focusing on the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP), this course trains students in billing protocols, coding systems, and use of electronic submission tools such as Teleplan. Students learn how to process fee-for-service claims, WorkSafeBC claims, and private insurance billing accurately, a crucial skill for administrative support staff in BC clinics and specialist offices.

Medical Documentation – 60 Hours

This course emphasizes accurate, concise, and professional documentation practices used in BC’s healthcare settings. Students learn to complete intake forms, referral letters, diagnostic reports, and chart entries in compliance with local privacy laws and clinical recordkeeping standards. The course also covers electronic health records (EHRs) used in BC, such as MOIS, Med Access, or Oscar EMR.

Computer Competencies – 60 Hours

Students develop computer literacy essential for medical office environments in BC, including use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), electronic medical records systems, and office productivity tools. Emphasis is placed on data entry accuracy, keyboarding speed, and managing emails and digital files within the context of healthcare workflows.

This course focuses on developing verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills necessary for working in diverse healthcare teams. Topics include patient interaction, conflict resolution, confidentiality, and professionalism.
